Hashable: A Look at the Networking Tool That Charmed SXSW

hashableAt the recent South By Southwest conference, you might have heard about a new networking service called Hashable. Apparently some are calling Hashable the next Zynga, Facebook or Twitter. Though the jury is still out on whether it will be South By Southwest’s new breakout company, event professionals may want to become familiar with it.

The Hashable iPhone or Android app (BlackBerry is said to be coming soon) allows you to fill out your contact info and link to Twitter and Foursquare. When you meet someone at a conference or event that you want to stay in touch with, you open the app, pick a hashtag like #justmet #with or #lunch and then enter the person’s Twitter handle or email address. If you post a connection to Twitter using the Hashable hashtags, Hashable automatically documents the connection. You can tag a place to each connection and also download their details to your phone.

Hashable also allows you to designate your “inner circle” of friends and monitor who they connect with.  It’s been described as LinkedIn with a mobile and location-based dimension. Over time, the service can help a user to create a comprehensive record of their personal and professional networks.

I became aware of it about 3 months ago when a connection on Twitter invited me to join during the Beta testing.  I guess I joined before really knowing what it was about because I saw it as a way to help connect people, something I’m big on.  But as time progressed I took notice of other things, for instance:

The Leaderboard – Hashable adds a gaming element by giving points to users every time they make a connection.  Stats are tracked for the month and for all time and leaderboards are regional.

Connections – are tracked for strength (based on how many times you’ve connected) and can be organized by strength or alphabetically.

Twitter/Foursquare Interface – A no-brainer. When you post a connection using the mobile Hashable app, it allows you to automatically post it on Twitter and Foursquare.

It seems that Hashable solves a very real problem for event & meeting attendees; getting that contact information into their phones quickly and easily.  But for those who aren’t very social media savvy, there may be a bit of a learning curve.
