Twitter and Facebook recently launched some major new features that have great potential for enhancing the experience of users.

The roll-out of Twitter’s revamped site began a few weeks ago, but many users are just getting it now. Twitter’s redesign features a two pane interface, a major switch from the old one-pane screen. There is a new emphasis on search, which is now prominently displayed at the top of the screen.  Like Facebook, new Twitter comes with embedded media in tweets that can be played right on the same page. And no longer will you have to click the “more button” when scrolling through tweets, as scrolling is now continuous.

Facebook groups has been revamped as well, in order to help users solve the problem of wanting to share information with some but not all of their Facebook friends. The revamped groups feature is a little like the failed Google Wave in that it allows users to create & edit group documents, enables real time group chat and allows email to the entire group.

What the new Facebook and Twitter features will mean for events professionals, remains to be seen.  But with the continued popularity of Facebook & Twitter as tools for such tasks as event marketing, planning, communication, networking and much more, the new tools aren’t likely to go unused.

Do you have thoughts on ways events professionals can make use of the new features?
